UP TO 7 DAYS FROM SYDNEY

Option 1. Sydney south then back to Sydney

Day 1. Head down the South Coast past Wollongong. Overnight at one of the beach towns such as Kiama or Ulladulla (both of which have great camping grounds).

Day 2. A cruisy day of exploring the South Coast. Stay somewhere like Bega or out at one of the nearby coastal towns.

Day 3. Follow Highway 23 inland to Cooma then follow the signs to Jindabyne, you could stay here – or carry on to Thredbo (good for walks in summer – you will need bookings in winter as it is a ski area). It would be good to spend a couple of nights in this area.

Day 4. Head back to Cooma then north on 23 to Canberra. This is the nation’s capital – great museums, the Houses of Parliament, the Institute of Sport.

Day 5 – 6. You can either follow the 23 north to the 31 then follow it all of the way to Sydney – or a great diversion is – take the back road from Goulbun to Taralga to Oberon then to Blackheath and Katoomba for the Blue Mountains. There are many great walks and lookouts from this the dividing range.

Option 2. Sydney north then back to Sydney

Day 1. Sydney to Myall Lakes National Park – follow Highway 1 (great coastal camping).

Day 2. Follow 1 up to Port Macquarie or on to Crescent Head.

Day 3. Follow 1 – you may go as far as Coffs Harbour but a great alternative place to stay is Bellingen.

Day4. Bellingen to Tamworth – the Country and Western Capital of Australia. A good alternative is to turn off highway 15 from Tamworth and head through Dungowan to Nundle. A great country town with a good pub and a wool museum. To get back to the main highway you head towards Wallabadah.

Day 5. Follow 15 until you see the turn off for Cessnock – and the Hunter Valley vineyards. You will pass the vineyards before you get to Cessnock.

Day 6. Follow the signs back to Sydney.
